Discussion of Loosening Some Restrictions

Gerald L. Curtis :: One of the problems that has resulted from the restrictive election law in Japan is that it has made it very difficult for candidates for public office to do the kinds of things, especially involving new technologies and the mass media, that have become a commonplace in virtually every other country.

So there's a lot of talk in Japan, discussion in Japan, about the need to loosen the election laws to enable candidates to have more freedom in terms of their election campaigns. But there is great concern that doing so would create unfair advantages for the more wealthy candidates from stronger political parties.
