Intra-party Competition and Factionalism

Gerald L. Curtis :: So, under this system, two things happened. One was that there was intra-party competition, and as a result of intra-party competition, you had factionalism in the LDP. Because it makes sense that if you are in the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and there are three candidates running from that party in the same district, that each one of those candidates would look to a different faction leader for support — because no faction leader would support more than one candidate, since the candidates are in effect fighting with each other. So, one of the consequences of this election system was to reinforce factionalism in the Liberal Democratic Party.
