INTEREST GROUPS IN JAPANESE POLITICS

Political Clout of Interest Groups

Gerald L. Curtis :: Interest groups in Japan try to influence the political process in many of the same ways that interest groups do in other countries, including the United States.

One of those ways is to give money and campaign support to candidates and political parties so that for candidates for the Diet, for political parties in Japan, getting the support of major interest groups is absolutely essential to being able to run an effective political campaign.

For the parties in the opposition to the Liberal Democratic Party — particularly for the Socialist Party or for what is now called the Democratic Party — the support of labor unions is particularly important.

And for the Liberal Democratic Party, the support of businessmen, and business organizations, and the farmers’ agricultural cooperatives are especially important.
