  • Using Geography To Learn About History [National Geographic]
    For grades 9-12. This lesson plan does not focus specifically on East Asia but can be modified to lead students to consider the ways in which geography affects historical events and processes.
  • Geography Matters in History (Using "The Land of Genghis Khan") [National Geographic]
    For grades 6-8. This lesson has students consider the ways in which historical events and processes have been affected by geography. Students will read historical features on the Internet, explain how geography affected those historical events or processes, and write stories describing how geographic variations might have led to different outcomes. Using the Land of Genghis Khan website will complement the examination of the Silk Road in Standard 17.

  • Examining the Relationships Among China, Japan and Korea Through Multi-Layered Timelines [The New York Times Learning Network]
    For grades 6-12. In this lesson, students examine current disputes between nations, and then, after learning about current tensions among Japan, China and South Korea, research and create timelines outlining the development of relationships among these nations. They then write letters from the perspective of a leader of one nation to a leader of another nation studied in class.

  • Examining Why Tension Still Exists Between Japan and Korea [The New York Times Learning Network]
    For grades 6-12. In this lesson, students will explore the dispute between Japan and South Korea over an island, research relevant history to put the current event into perspective, and create postage stamps illustrating possible solutions to the current land dispute.

  • Korea-Japan Wartime Relations [Asia Society]
    For grades 6-12. Students will discuss Korea’s relationship with Japan from 1910–45, and examine the issue of losses suffered during wartime and occupation. They will consider a range of opinions on the issue of compensation for human and physical losses during wartime and occupation, and reach a reasoned conclusion after considering evidence and arguments. They will explain reasons for adopting a particular point of view and defend their opinions with evidence and reason.
